Let’s face it, sex is messy. Although a clean-up routine is not medically essential, it can help you feel clean and fresh. After a steamy session, these 5 tips by Dr. Nirmala Shivalingaiah,

Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, can help you ward off any worries about getting a nasty

infection, or just feeling icky after you've done the deed.

1) Pee

Peeing after sex can help you avoid a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI), especially if you’re

someone who’s prone to UTIs or yeast infections. It helps in flushing out germs and bacteria that have made their way up to the urethra, preventing any possible infections.

2) Clean your vagina

The most important thing to remember is that your vagina has a self-cleansing mechanism to

balance pH levels. This means that you don’t have to do much. Simply wipe the vulva gently

with a clean towel or rinse the outer region with water and mild soap. Whatever you do, don’t douche! You don’t need any intimate/vaginal creams or washes. It’s best to stay away from the anything scented.

It is also important to always clean your sex toys to wash off any semen or bodily fluids that can leave behind infection-causing bacteria. Warm water and mild soap will do the trick.

3) Drink water

This is your reminder to HYDRATE, even during and after sex. Always keep a glass of water

handy, you’ll need it after all that activity. Drinking water can also help you pee after sex to

avoid infections.

4) Wear loose-fitting clothes

It’s always good to slip into something comfortable and breathable once you clean up. This will help your vagina relax and stay fresh.

5) Get tested

Pay attention to what your vagina looks and feels like after sex. If there is redness, swelling,

burning or any irritation, it’s best to consult with your gynaecologist as soon as you can. Getting tested can help you detect any Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) that you may have contracted and get suitable treatment.

We hope these tips help, but don't forget to take a moment to enjoy the post-sex cuddles, conversations and company before you hop out of bed and head to the bathroom.
